Stephen Dickson, Chair, Board of Directors

 

Stephen retired from the WEC Energy Group in 2016, where he served as Vice President, Controller and Chief Accounting Officer. His business career includes working as an auditor and business advisor for Arthur Andersen prior to joining WICOR, later acquired by Wisconsin Energy.

Stephen served on the board of Aurora Healthcare, the largest healthcare system in Wisconsin, Chairing the Audit and Compliance Committee and serving on the Compensation Committee.  He currently serves on the board of CM Regent and is a member of the Nominating and Governance Committee.

In retirement, Stephen volunteers at the Allendale Correctional Institute where he leads religious studies and business classes. He served on the Finance Committee of his community (Colleton River) and helps coordinate the Audubon club.

Stephen holds a Bachelor of Science degree with an accounting major from Oral Roberts University. During his career he was a Certified Public Accountant and passed the Certified Internal Auditor exam.

Jerry Rexroad, Treasurer, Director

 

Jerry is a CPA, and President and CEO of Carolina Financial, Inc. He has 25 years of experience in the financial sector and brings deep expertise to FreshStart Visions including the ability to develop and implement strategic plans for growth.  He has served on multiple boards and is currently the Executive Chairman of the Board at Crescent Mortgage Company and an Elder at Coastal Community Church in Conway, SC.

Jerry holds a bachelor of science degree in accounting from Bob Jones University.

Melissa E. Milanak, director

Melissa E. Milanak, Ph.D. is a licensed clinical psychologist, keynote speaker, executive consultant, and internationally recognized academic with expertise in sleep disorders, anxiety, stress, PTSD and workplace well-being. She founded MIND Impact Consulting, transforming her passion for helping others succeed and clinical expertise into effective practical application for executives and their organizations improving performance, quality of life, and resilience. Dr. Milanak has impacted audiences around the world including speaking for the CDC and Barron’s Financial. Additionally, she has leveraged decades of sales and marketing experience to now work as the Director of InVista Sales & Strategic Partnerships for Psychological Assessment Resources (PAR), developing new programs to promote workplace wellbeing and reduce mental health stigma.

 

Dr. Milanak earned her PhD in Clinical & Community Psychology from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, and currently maintains an active academic career as an Associate Professor providing clinical services, conducting federally funded research (including 20+ years in Northern Ireland and South Africa and as a Visiting Research Professor at Ulster University) and as the Director of Continuing Education, Community and Alumni Relations for MUSC’s Department of Psychiatry & Behavioral Sciences.

Joseph L. Nicholson,  Director

 

Joe is the Managing Director – Investments and Senior PIM Portfolio Manager at Nicholson Wealth Management Group. He has over 27 years of investment experience managing for individual and institutional investment consulting clients with Wells Fargo Advisors Financial Network.

Joe’s service includes being a Professional Member of Kingdom Advisors which is a non-profit organization for Christian Financial professionals. He has served as President of the NAMI of Charleston and founding Treasurer of the Alzheimer’s Association of the Low Country, and past founding Treasurer of the nonprofit Carolina Autism. He  also served on the board of the College of Charleston’s Alumni Association and as Treasurer of the non-profit Coastal Crisis Chaplaincy and is active in Dave Ramsey’s Financial Peace University and Cursillo ministries.

 

Joe holds a masters degree in business administration from the Darla Moore School of Business and a certificate in investment management analysis from The Wharton School.

Tom Pace, Director

 

Tom Pace, a graduate of the United States Merchant Marine Academy, has over 40 years experience serving in senior management positions in engineering, sales and construction of pollution control and energy plant projects.  Since retiring in 2008 he has been an active volunteer working with: Hurricane Katrina and Sandy rebuilding; Habitat For Humanity New York building projects (Volunteer of the year 2011); El Hogar in Honduras; Seaman’s Church Institute; Project manager for 10 million dollar restoration of Grace Church Brooklyn Heights; and team leader for Christian Help in Park Slope kitchen.  Upon moving to Charleston in 2015 he has volunteered at the VA Hospital and with the Charleston Seafarer’s Ministry.  Since 2017 he has been a volunteer with FreshStart Visions serving as an inside trainer, and mentor to the men following their release from prison.

William Stewart, Director

 

Will is a veteran of the U.S. Army and has over 45 years’ experience in the financial sector including: Founding Partner – Alger Partners LLC; Managing Partner – William S. Paley LLC; new division developer – Morgan Stanley; Co-founder retail sales arm – Dillon Read LLC; and independent financial advisor for various entities and individuals. He brings enthusiasm for telling the FreshStart Visions story to his volunteer work and is leading the Board, staff and program participants in building awareness of our mission and ministry.  Will is committed to working with FreshStart Visions both as a mentor for newly released ex-offenders and as a visionary who helps the organization to look to the future.

 

Will holds a bachelor of science degree from Columbia University.

Jack Canter, Director​

Jack retired from BlueCross BlueShield of SC in 2011 after a thirty-year career that culminated in serving as Vice President and Senior IT Development Officer. He collaborated with the CEO and CIO for all corporate systems strategic IT planning, development, programming, and enhancements in an IT organization with two thousand IT employees and two large IBM data centers that averaged processing one billion dollars of healthcare payments daily. 

 

Prior to BCBSSC, Jack worked four years for Ross Perot’s Electronic Data Systems company in Philadelphia, Dallas, and Washington DC. He is a six-year United States Navy veteran and graduated with honors from Appalachian State University with a BS in Mathematics and Computer Science. Jack continues to volunteer his time working with non-profits and faith-based programs that engage in helping others recover from life’s challenges and finding new meaning, value, and purpose within their lives.

Tim Terry, Founder & Director

 

Tim was released from prison in 2002 and has since devoted his time to designing and implementing programs and service to help other ex-offenders reenter their communities.  His faith-based programs focus on character development and learning to live a life that does not lead back to prison. Tim hopes to establish a national through FreshStart Visions to show how redemption and reconciliation can change the world for previously incarcerated people.  With a focus on developing the heart, mind and soul of a person (INSIDE) Tim leads ex-offenders to achieve a place in society (OUTSIDE) as productive, tax-paying citizens who are part of the local work-force and prepared to help others who are on the same journey.

Herbert L. Drayton III, Director

 

Herbert is President and CEO of Vertical Holdings, a privately held management group located in Charleston South Carolina. Vertical Holdings currently manages Carolina Correctional Management Services, Corporate Scholar, Dale Carnegie South Carolina, and Productivity Solutions & Training of Charleston (PST).

 

His career includes serving in the United States Marine Corps Reserve and the United States Air Force.  Herbert generously volunteers time with non-profits, currently serving as Board Chair for One80 Place. He serves as a board member for Palmetto Goodwill, Roper Foundation, and the Coastal Community Foundation. He is also a member of the Advisory Board for The School of Business at Charleston Southern University.

 

Herbert holds an associate degree in science in electronic systems technology from the Community College of the Air Force, and a bachelor of science degree in business administration from the University of Phoenix.

Joseph Tecklenburg, Director

Joseph is a native Charlestonian and a principal at CC&T Real Estate - a full service commercial real estate brokerage. Joseph works with small business and investors in the market and has been practicing for over 8 years. He is a Wofford College graduate and earned his Master’s in Public Administration from the University of South Carolina. He is active in the community and serves on the Board of the Charleston Rotary Club and has served on Wofford’ Terrier Club Board. Joseph is married to Amanda and they have one daughter, Evelyn, and reside in West Ashley.
